RELOCATION OF THE GENERALATE

Belgium (1833-2012)

UK (2012-2021)

Rome (2021 Onwards)

The Generalate of the Daughters of the Cross was originally established in 1833 at the ‘Mother House’ in Liège, Belgium. In 2012, the Generalate was relocated to Cheam, England. However, over time, obtaining UK visas for the Asian sisters became increasingly difficult, eventually making it nearly impossible. This situation prompted the General Council to reconsider the location of the Generalate, leading to the decision to move it to Rome.

In addition to the visa challenges, the aging infrastructure of the existing Aged Home in Rome also posed difficulties, ultimately resulting in its closure. After consulting with the Congregation and receiving approval from the ‘Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life,’ the decision to relocate the Generalate to Rome was made in 2019.

The General Council, along with its support community, officially relocated to Rome in September 2021. While the relocation presented its own set of challenges, it has proven to be a fruitful decision. The move has made obtaining visas significantly easier, and the moderate climate, along with the proximity to the Vatican, has provided greater accessibility to essential resources. Additionally, being closer to the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) allows the Congregation to tap into valuable resources and offers sisters the opportunity to attend a variety of courses. These factors collectively contribute to the growth and flourishing of the Congregation's Life and Mission.
